Porsche 914 - How to Install the Targa and Other Major Body Seals
In this video I'll help demystify the process of installing the targa seal, and show how easy it is to install the other main seals. It's important to have good seals beacuse 914s rust when you look at them. Keeping water out means keeping rust at bay.

It's the biggest gathering of Porsche 914s in the Mountain West. Watch as 50 skittles-colored 914s drive the canyons and parade down Main Street in Park City. We also got a private shop tour of Kindig-It Designs (from Bitchin' Rides), had our own corral at a huge SLC aircooled show, and enjoyed meeting new friends with similar passions for these cars. Thanks to our host, PMB Performance.

    White Spirit / Mineral Spirit is a solvent and one of the things that chemically damages rubber so should never be used (unless you can immediately clean it off with something else, and it's not easy to clean off; and which in turn can be even more damaging to rubber); it will both expand rubber and leach polymers, from any rubber it comes in contact with.

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr 15 днів тому

      The quick exposure and immediate rinse I used shouldn’t have done any damage. If concerned, don’t do it. Or at least use a clean paper towel to wipe it down after. If the towel is clean white, highly doubtful any rubber has been compromised.

      Hey there. If your car is still stock, the fuel pump is on the engine side of the firewall on the lower right. Many people have moved the fuel pump to the front of the car. Hi Ian, Great Playlist. I'm making notes! I'm in the market for a 914 (I wish, I wish...) I'm newer than a newbie. My dad was a mechanic and taught us kids to work on our cars. I hope I have the patience needed to take this on but my skills are limited. I'm not a welder, or painter, or mechanic by trade so this will all be new. I'm hoping to find one that drives and clean enough to get my wife to cruise with me! LOL.. On this episode you talked about the hell hole and the need to see the outside with the rocker covers off. If I ask an owner to do this how hard is it to get them off? Thanks for the videos!

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr 2 місяці тому

      Hi, Workin. It depends. If the car is highly original (or faithfully cared for), the rocker covers may be held on by several rivets on top and a few screws below. Many cars have had the rockers off over their lifetime, in which case screws are often used in place of rivets. An unsophisticated owner may be grumbly about drilling the rivets and removing the panels. Knowledgeable owners know that removing the rocker covers is a part of any due diligence and will probably have pics of the longs behind the rockers already. IF you find an amazing car and the owner flatly won't allow the rockers to come off, and you feel like taking a gamble, poke the area around the right jack donut with a screwdriver or awl and see if the metal is solid. Ideally you'll do both before handing over money for a 914.

    Beautiful car. Glad to see teeners getting quality attention. But, I wonder about putting the oil thermostat in front like that. Most engine cooling takes place on the engine itself, so what harm would there be in not having a thermostat at all? Maybe more importantly, until the engine is hot, the engine is having to pump thick oil 10 feet up to the front only to find a closed thermostat, then having to push that oil 10 feet to the back again. Porsche put the thermostat near the engine on 911 for a reason.

      Thanks, Chris. When you say “fix” the washers, what’s wrong with yours?

      @@IanKarr The water just dribbles out of the spray nozzels! Ive replaced the 4mm water tubes, the actual spray nozzels that squart the water, plus the line that goes to the spare tire and the water bottle seams to presurize ok. If i leave the system presurized over nght the tire looses a lot of air. I cant even see where the valve unit sits near the stearing column to take a look at that!!

      @@chrisphillips2358 Clearly seems to be a pressure loss somewhere. Might be in the steering column switch...

      @@IanKarr Indeed... Do you know/have any pictures as to where the switch is or what it looks like? Cant find anything on the interweb!

      The washer trigger is integrated with the wiper switch. Personally, I think it’s better to install an electric pump rather than topping off the spare tire

    This is great. I literally watched every video. You explain it so well as to how each part works. Now I just need to find an original FI system for my bus so I get junk the carb set up!

    Nothing wrong with using silicone based windshield sealant. Worked great on my 914 and no cracking

      It's definitely a stronger bond. But the lack of flex has caused cracking for some. Great that it works for you!

    Brutal ,no way I’m going bang a $10 spark plug

      Totally understood. But I’d rather have the 10 plug gapped correctly before I put it in my 50K car.
